Brush Care + Maintenance

Picture
Professional brushes made with care and expertise, need quality upkeep to maintain their integrity. Just as you would look after your own hair, it is essential to give the same love and attention to your artisan brush collection.

The following cleaning tips detail the ideal way to prolong the life and quality of your brushes.

The cleaning process

1. Opt for an antibacterial gentle cleanser/soap/ shampoo to remove any bacteria picked up during use, followed by a conditioner. Refer to "Expert Tip 3". We recommend you use the Merton Muaremi "All Natural Brush Soap".

2.  Lightly dampen the bristles in lukewarm water, being careful to avoid getting water on the rest of the brush, as this may cause damage over time.

3. Use a combination of circular and sweeping motions in the palm of your hand to lather the bristles with the All Natural Brush Soap, before gently rinsing the brush bristles of any residue. Follow by a conditioner. repeat the process.
4. Post-wash: Gently squeeze any excess water out of the bristles with your fingertips or paper towel, before softly moulding the brush bristles back into its original shape.

5. It's essential to cover your Buff, Highlight and Blend brushes with a brush guard to help retain the natural shape and protect the mixed fibres. Slide the brush guard up the handle and over the brush bristles.

6. Allow your brushes to air-dry on a towel overnight after washing and applying the brush guard. To eliminate excess water, let the bristles and ferrule (the metal part of the brush attached to the bristles) hang over the edge of the counter. Once the brushes are completely dry, gently slide the brush guard off. Fluff up the brush bristles by tapping the handle lightly on your hand.

Note: Avoid drying your brushes in direct sunlight, as this can weaken the glue in the handle.

Expert Tips for Caring for Your Make-Up Brushes

  1. Wash Before First Use
Always wash your make-up brushes before their initial use to remove any stray bristles or residue from natural fiber brushes.
  2. Fix Misshaped Bristles
If your brush bristles appear misshaped, give them a wash and let them dry overnight with brush guards on. This will restore them to their original shape.
  3. Use Gentle Cleansers
As most brush sanitisers contain alcohol, avoid using additional harsh detergents or cleansers on your natural fiber brushes. Alcohol and strong chemicals can weaken the bristles, causing them to break. Instead, choose a gentle cleanser like the STUDIO.KIT "All Natural Brush Soap," enriched with nourishing oils. For extra care, follow with a brush conditioner to maintain the natural oils within the fibers.
  4. Dry Brushes Properly
Always dry your brushes with the bristles facing downward or horizontally. Drying them with bristles facing upward can cause water or alcohol to seep into the ferrule (the metal part of the brush), loosening glue and potentially causing bristle loss.
  5. Maintain Hygiene
    • Brushes used for liquid products should be cleaned daily, as they trap more bacteria.
    • Brushes used for powdered products can be cleaned every couple of days using a gentle cleanser to ensure they remain disinfected and ready for use.

Note
If you experience some dye or bristle loss from your brush, this is completely normal, especially with natural fiber brushes. Stray hairs will diminish with each wash.
To maintain your brushes, avoid soaking them in water or alcohol, as this can weaken the glue and bristles.
If you notice excessive bristle loss—such as all fibers detaching from the ferrule (the metal part of the brush) or the ferrule detaching from the handle—please contact us at [email protected] to address any potential manufacturing defects.
